Putting the pieces together after a concussion

Having experienced five concussions in my life, there were many missing pieces that I did not understand when it came to the unbearable symptoms associated to concussions and why it was happening.

When the brain experiences a concussion, we must look at a cellular level to fully understand where these “concussion-like” symptoms are coming from. When the concussion occurs, there is a sudden stretch of the neurons in the brain, which immediately alters the biochemistry of the brain. One of the most important biochemical changes is within the mitochondria. The mitochondria are your energy power sources for cells in your brain and 1-MINUTE AFTER THE CONCUSSION it becomes dysfunctional. With limited energy, your neurons begin to work faster, more rapidly, but less efficiently.

As a result, this leads to sudden biochemical changes, beginning immediately after injury, and subsequent depression of brain energy metabolism. These cellular changes are seen even in the MILDEST FORMS OF CONCUSSIONS. With these metabolic derangements coupled with the “ENERGY-CRISIS” occurring at a cellular level in the brain, this may be the reason for the lack of neuronal plasticity and the subsequent cognitive defects (i.e. headache, lack of concentration, mood swings, depression, anxiety, personality changes) that affect concussed patients.
