ABOUT

Immune Health

The connection between your immune system, a nutrient-rich diet and proper gut bacterial balance:
During the digestive process your gut absorbs nutrients and uses them to fuel the production of important immune cells. Healthy bacteria are also used to stimulate the development of T‑cells, a type of immune cell responsible for distinguishing your body’s cells and tissue from potentially harmful things. When there is an imbalance in your digestive system, such as an overgrowth of “bad” bacteria, or not enough health-promoting bacteria, it can confuse your immune system causing it to attack to its own cells. If the immune system is too busy reacting to healthy cells, or if there are nutrient deficiencies present, you will not only be more susceptible to getting sick, but it can also take longer to recover.  These are just two of the reasons behind why maintaining a healthy gut is essential in the function of a strong immune system.

THE IMPORTANCE OF A COMPLETE ASSESSMENT

It is important to consider why you are getting sick so often or taking so long to recover.  Do you have digestive issues? How is your diet? Are you overweight or not getting enough sleep?  Stress can also have a negative impact, which is why taking a look at your stress management skills is also useful. Our Naturopathic Doctors will assess for these areas of concern, and more when they conduct the complete health review and physical exam.  They will also advise you on any useful Lab Tests to help uncover related issues like nutritional deficiencies or other biochemical concerns.

TREATMENTS

a Customized Treatment plan

Once the core issue(s) have been identified, your Naturopathic Doctor will formulate a treatment plan based on the most up-to-date health-related information available. This plan will include one or a combination of the following:

    Diet and nutrition

Food is the best medicine and this is a cornerstone of naturopathic and holistic nutritional practice. Many medical conditions can be improved more with therapeutic foods and nutritional supplements than they can by other means, with fewer complications and side effects.

Naturopathic doctors use dietetics, cleansing and nutritional supplementation to establish a proper nutritional foundation for their patients.  Read more about our Naturopathic Doctors or book a consultation with one to ask any questions you may have.

    Vitamins and natural supplementations

It’s true that the supplements found at health clinics are typically more expensive then the prices you’ll find in superstores, however, it’s often not a big difference and the quality assurance offered makes it worth your while.  These supplements are typically better absorbed and more effective, giving you the peace of mind that what you are taking is actually doing what it is intended to do.

    Herbal Medicine

Plant substances are powerful medicines used to treat a variety of illnesses. Where single chemically-derived drugs may only address a single problem, botanical medicines are able to address a variety of problems simultaneously. Their organic nature makes botanicals compatible with the body’s own chemistry; hence, they can be gently effective with few toxic side effects.

    Stress management and lifestyle changes

Stress seems to be a part of our lives in many different ways.  It is present at work, home, in our relationships and also brought on by life events. It’s true that some stress can be good, but when we are experiencing it in a few different areas of our life at once, it can be difficult to manage. We cannot always eliminate the circumstance causing our stress and at times it can become overwhelming, but lifestyle counselling can help teach the tools needed to get through these difficult times by providing an outlet to help us cope with the stress of everyday life and specific life events.  With practice, and support we can keep our stress at healthy levels that keep us alert and motivated to face challenges.

    IV vitamin immune drip

For patients who are new to the clinic and IV therapy, an initial 30-45 minute assessment with one of our Naturopathic Doctors is required. This will include a health history review, brief physical exam and a plan to obtain your most recent blood test results.  After your initial assessment, the length of your IV treatment will depend on the type of IV formula selected for you. The majority are between 35-60 minutes long.

NOTE: Please eat a snack and drink plenty of water within the hour of your treatment.
